Lucien Mouillard Français, 1841-1924
French military-history painter and art historian
Born in Paris in 1841 into an artistic family, Lucien Mouillard trained under Isidore Pils and Léon Cogniet. He excelled in military-historical painting, documenting regiments from the Louis XV era through battle scenes and cavalry portrayals, with both documentary accuracy and expressive strength.
From 1870 to 1904 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and later at the Winter Salon. His travels to Algeria and Tunisia inspired Orientalist works that reflect his interest in Near Eastern subjects. He was also an author, publishing a scholarly work on the Louis XV army, illustrating his dual investment in art and history.
Decorated as an officer of the Nichan Iftikhar, he died in Paris in 1924. His prolific output—military scenes, Orientalist pieces, and genre compositions—stands out for its precision, intellectual depth, and historical significance.
